Assassination suspect surrendersCantu gives himself up in MatamorosBy The Associated Press and Herald staffMATAMOROS — Carlos Angel Cantu Narvaez, a suspect in the assassination of the Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI) second-in-command, Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, was captured by Polida Judicial Federal (Federal Judicial Police) afler he surrendered to local television station personnel Saturday.Cantu said he is innocent, but according to police sources, Federal Judicial officers flew him to Mexico City, where the investigation about Ruiz Massieu’s assassination continues.Cantu said he surrendered for fear his family would be tortured by police.The Associated Press reported Saturday that some investigators linked a fugitive drug lord and a union leader who is in jail to Ruiz Massieu’s death.Ruiz Massieu was shot and killed by a man who was paidFernando R. Gonzalezfor the crime, according to what Cantu told police Friday.The involvement climbed the highest levels of ihe Mexican political world when the assassination was linked to a public officer convicted of corruption when Ruiz Massieu was governor of the Mexican state ofGuerrero, as well as to politicians from his native state, Tamaulipas.Two suspects involved Friday were Joaquin Hernandez Galicia (La Quina) former leader of the oil workers union, and Juan Garcia Abrego, alleged leader of the drug gulf cartel, who isCarlos Cantu Narvaezsought in connection with many tons of cocaine from South America that have been bootlegged into the United States.Daniel Aguilar Trevino, 28, has reportedly confessed to Wednesday’s assassination.Fernando Rodriguez Gonzalez has been named as an accomplice in the slaying.Daniel Aguilar Trevino
