Her mother, Mrs. Mary E. Johnson, of Rio. was sent to a hospital at Galesburg Sept. 1J as an insane patient. It is further knownthat Id years ago, before she was married. Mrs. Markham attempted self-destruction by jumping in a cistern, but was rescued. As early as July Mrs. Markham manifested symptoms of a diseased mind. Horace L. Markham, grandfather of the murdered children, who visited the family at that time, says she was suffering with extreme melancholia, due, he believed, to the dreary monotony and drudgery of herlife. Her mental condition has beenso much worse since her mother was found insane that Markham had two older children remain home from school to watch her.She was born at Rio and most of her life was passed there. Her father, a union soldier, died long ago and the family has had a hard struggle.Mrs. Markham has a brother in Rio and one in Rock Island,Kill* Child nnd Self.St r -/%»«» ~
