Bemis claimed that he did not bring any booze out of Owatonna, except a few pint bottles which Allen had on his person, and that far from trying to kidnap him, he brought the fellow back to Albert Bea, at his request, and intended to bring him on to Mason City, but that Allen shook him* 'there. The story of a phone call for money to a Mason City law firm also came out in the course of the inquiry, but the facts were not made public.Be mis says that Allen was sore at the police because the authorities would not give hifn a large sum of money to remain here and testify, and told the foreigners whom he liascontributed to the getaway thathe would double-cross them, by leaving, so they bargained with him to bring out liis departure. At Owatonna, according to the stories, the double-cross became a triple or quadruple one, when the story of the big shipment of booze was sent to Mason City, coupled with the request for funds, and other things, resulting finally in Bemls' arrest, and the kidnapping story.Captain Buchanan and Chief Gorman, when through with their questioning, locked both men up, and left the matter for the district court, in which Allen is wanted as a witness, to settle, following investigation of any conspiracy there may have been to spirit the witness out of the state.
