A Long Hunt.Pile first call troiu Alien came . from Owatonna shortly after noon i yesterday, when Allen tokl Chief G-or-j man that he was there with Tom Be-mis, who has long been suspected of ‘‘booze running,” and was to the effect that Bern is was to leave Owatonna that afternoon, with a cargo of sixty gallons of whiskey. Allen at that time said nothing about being kidnapped, and It developed afterwards that he was telephoning from a Greek restaurant, and that the foreigners there knew what information be was giving the police.Later, he telegraphed for money, on the plea that he had to get back here to testify, and on the strength of his being a material witness, badly needed, and because of the supposedly reliable information about the booze cargo, he got it. It developed later that he spent this money In an Owatonna saloon, with his ' Greek friends, and bragged about how“easy the authorities here were to give it to him.Because of Allen’s messages, a po^ lice car was sent out to patrol the Jefferson Highway in the Kensett-Northwood vicinity, as it was at Ken-sott that it was said the booze car would turn west and leave the main road to come into Mason City by a1 by-road. |Shortly after supper another message came from Allen that the men would not start out until about 8:30, and another later that they would load up just after the Owatonna sa-loona closed at 10 p. m. On receipt of this message, Capt. Buchanan, with another car, started out to meet the booze smugglers. Near Kensett he met the first car that had gone out, and it then went to another convenient place on the road, where it was thought the booze car might return to the main-traveled road. Buchanan went on north, and finally met Bemis coming south with his car, but the, Greek was carrying no booze. He told Buchanan in response to an inquiry as to Allen’s whereabouts that he left him at the Rock Island depot in Albert Lea.
