ALLEGED LIBEL ON LORD EUSTONCriminal proceedings were commenced on Nov. 2H at the instance of the Ear! of Euston against Mr. Ernest Parke, the editor of the North London Pre.**% in respect of a libel contained in an issue of that paper dated November 16, 1889, and beaded “The West-end Scandals.” Leave to institute the proceedingswas obtained from Mr. Justice Field in Clumbers,*where an application was made by Mr. Lionel Hart, Instructed by Messrs. Lewis and Lewis. Mr. Mins ton Slater, who represented the defendant, did not offer any opposition. Later in the day Mr. George Lewis, who was accompanied by the Earl of Euston, made an application to Mr. Vaughan, at Bow-street, for a warrant against Mr. Parke in respect of the libel complained of, and in support of his application read the following information which had been laid by Lord Euston : The information of Henry James, Earl of Euston, of 4, Gros-venor-place, and of Eaton Hall, Thetford, in the county of Norfolk, sworn this 23rd day of November, said, *• I am the eldest son of the Duke of Grafton. 1 produce a copy of a newspaper called the North London Press, issued on the 16th November, 1889. On page 5 of the said newspaper, appeared a paragraph beaded 4 The West End Scandals/ names of some of the distinguished criminals who have escaped. The said paragraph continued, 1 In an issue of the 28th September, we stated that amongst the number of aristocrats who were mixed up in the indescribably loathsome scandal in Cievelnd»8(reet, Tottenham Court-read, were the heir of the duke, and the young son of a duke. The men to whom we then referred, were the Earl of Euston son of the Duke of Grafton. The former (meaning myself) we believe has departed to Peru/ The paragraph continued,* These men have been allowed to leave the country, and thus defeat the ends of justice, because their prosecution would disclose the fact that a few more distinguished and more highly placed personages than themselves were inculpated in this disgusting crime. The criminals in the case are to be numbered by the score/ The paragraph concludes:* It is full time that the severest examples should bring home to all that there are certain foul crimes (too prevalent of late by all accounts) that we could not tolerate unless London is to be regarded as the disgrace and opprobrium of modern civilisation.’ T am the Earl of Euston referred to in this paragraph. It is untrue that I have absconded from England and gone to Peru. It is untrue that I have been guilty of any such crime. I produce the order of the judge directing that criminal proceedings be instituted against the said Ernest Parke for the said libel on me, and I apply for a warrant for his apprehension.*1 Mr. Vaughan; Is that the information and is the earl here? The Earl of Euston was then sworn, andstated that be had signed the information. Mr.Vaughan: Then let the warrant issue.
