An effort is feeing made to have Eli Lowry released from the penitentiary. Lowry was sent to the Prison 8outh for ^ |'v life in 1876, for the part he took in the murder of Thomas Moody, at Orleans. It will be remembered that Bent Jones, a leading Democratic politician of Marion township, in conjunction with some of the Tolivers, had made an unsuccessful attempt to destroy the lives of Moody and his sisters, who were heirs to property which would fall to him (Jonee) in case of their death; having raided Moody's house one night, throwing bombs into it, and shooting him through the body as he fled iijto acornfield. Moody recovered from thewound, and moved to Orleans. One nightabout 8 o'clock Lowry, hired by Jones, puttwo loads of bockshot into Moody as hestepped out of his doorway killing him.The shot had previously been rolled inpoison to make the mwrdered man’s deathcertain. Lowry was abont 19 years old,and turning State’s evidence at the trial,sent Jones to the penitentiary for life, as well m himself. Jones was a candidate before the Democratic county convention for sheriff at the time of his arrest for thecrime.
