mmRum Ring Witness Testifies “Hush’; Money Was PaidPEORIA, 111., Nov. 27.—(INS)—j Members of the alleged Illinois-Iowa I liquor ring who operated in RockIsland and Moline, 111., and Davenport, la., had to pay hush money” at the rate of $1 a gallon, Paul Josephs of Wichita, Kan., testified in Federal Judge Louis Fitzhenry’s court today.Josephs previously testified he soldNick Coin, Ed Lathrop, Frank Smithand other Tri-City co-defendants of Ted Newberry a total of 3,000 gallons of alcohol over a period of three weeks.A month after the St. Valentine’sday massacre in Chicago, he said,he returned to the Tri-Cities and began hauling and selling liquor for Coin. The alcohol which cost $4.50 a gallon wholesale retailed at $7.50,he testified. He declared Coin told him an extra $1 per gallon had to be charged for protection.”
