CHEATED AT CARDS THEN USED A KNIFED«*tecth«*i» Searching for V «**»n I la n t of KwPiuroImn »» Llgbtbodf.Foliowing a game of cards, with a turkey as the stake, Fred Light body, employed by the city, and at one time a member of the police force, was badly cut by a man named Smith in a saloon on Habersham and Jones streets last night. ^Light body nearly bled to death, and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital In a serious condition. Smith made hts escape, and the c ity detectives were still searching for him at an early hour this morning. Although weak from the loss of blood, it is not believed that IJght-boly was dangerously wounded.The information received by the police was that the men were playing cards for a turkey, and that Smith was losing. In order to break up the game without having to pay for the turkey, it is charged he slipped* a card under the table for the purpose of making a misdeal. He was detected by Light-body's son-in-law and called down. It is alleged that Smith called the otherman a liar, and that this pro- ;voked the quarrel.Light body objected to the language used towifrds his son-in-law and was calling Smith to account for it when that individual Is alleged to have dr?ivn his knife. Believing that he Intended to use it anyhow Light bodyclinched with the armed man and in the clinch was cut. His left ear was almost severed from his head and two ugly cuts were made In the temple. The cutting occurred in a room adjoining the bar *ind Smith made his escape at once. •An artery had been severed and Light body almost bled to death before ho could be carried to the hospital,only a block away. For some reason itwas not made apparent to the police until midnight that there had been a serious cutting affray and the detectives had to be gotten out of bed. Lightbody lives at No. £11 Gordon street, east, and Is well known. Thepolice were unable to tell anythingabout the man who used the knife.
