Va. in 1989, the sulfur reduction in the 3,000 tons of coal treated with BenChem reagents was more than twice what the plant normally achieved.But a researcher at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale said although he had not heard of Bender’s tests, he was skeptical of his claim to increase sulfur elimination.“I’ve heard of people claiming that, but nothing’s ever really come out in a successful application,” said Rick Honaker, an assistant professor of mining engineering.‘The problem is you have two different forms of sulfur you have to worry about, organic and pyritic,” Honaker said. “You can get maybe 50 to 60 percent rejection with the pyritic sulfur, but even if you could remove it 100 percent, you’re left with the organic sulfur, which is still too high to meet EPA regulations (for burning).”One report from the BenChem group states that the cost of the reagents add only $1.50 per ton to the expense of refining, but without knowing the exact chemicals the BenChem process uses, Honaker said it is impossible to test the truth of that claim.“The only way you can remove organic sulfur is chemically, and I haven’t seen a chemical process at this point in time that’s economical to use,” he said.But BenChem associates insist the process can be used cheaply and effectively without extreme modifications in refinement machin-If valid, such a process could have far-reaching implications for the world coal and agricultural markets—and for sulfur-rich Southern Illinois coal, it could mean a leg up in competition with the low-sulfur western coals that have dominated the U.S. market in recent years.“I’ve briefly tested your Illinois No. 6 coal out there, and I had good results on that testing,” said Bender, a private, part-time researcher who has labored on coal beneficia-tion for the better part of 13 years and holds two patents on coal-cleaning methods.“In the past I had kept away from very hard coals such as anthracite,” Bender said, “but within the last year we’ve found that by modifying the reagents, we can have some success with that also.”But Bender and his associates are intentionally vague when quizzed on the specific ingredients of the reagents used in what they call the “BenChem process.”“We have been using surface agents to do the activation,” said Bender, an environmental chemistry consultant who also is a doctor of dentistry. “We have been using ammonium salts and ammonium compounds, although I have gone on to other types of materials since then.”eiy, and can eliminate huge amounts of coal-related waste.In one facet of the Bender vision, the gob piles dotting Coal Country could be significantly shrunk by treatment with the process.“Most coal gob heaps are anywhere from 20 to as high as 40 percent coal,” said BenChem Vice President of Engineering Bill Stein. “First off, we would remove the coal. Then the rest of it would go on through processing, and if there’s enough gravel, than that could be segregated off and used to line ditches, or maybe used for drainage beds or road base. Then the remainder would be put into fertilizer form.“You would probably get rid of, conservatively, 80-plus percent of this reject material,” Stein said.Although unable to vouch for Stein’s predicted results, Honaker said steps certainly must be taken to cut coal waste drastically.sounds too good to be true, but there’s definitely a need to eliminate the waste that we have and at least reduce the amount of the waste that we’re creating today,” he said. There’s a definite need for that type of process.”State agrees not to seek deathBy NICK MARIANO Staff WriterA 19-year-old man who confessed to aiming and shooting a Carrier Mills resident pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to first-degree murder in agreement with the state that it does not seek the death penalty against him.Joe W. Jordan, of Bald Knob, Ark., also entered a plea of guilty in the First Circuit Court in Saline County to theft of an automobile, a 1989 Ford Mustang owned by murder victim Ralph Thompson.The Saline County Sheriffs Department discovered Thompson’s body Aug. 13, two days after he was shot three times and killed. His body was found covered in a quilt about 20 to 30 feet away from his home at 305 Smith Road. The car was discovered missing at that time as well.When the sheriff’s department found out in cooperation with the Department of Criminal Investigation that Jordan may have left the state, it released an all-points-bul-letin for Jordan on a warrant for theft.He was arrested a week and a half later on Aug. 21 in Austin,Nev.According to State’s AttorneyRod Wolf, Jordan agreed to an open plea with the state if the state wouldnot seek the death penalty.First-degree murder carries a possible sentence of 20 to 60 years imprisonment. However, he may face a life sentence if Wolf can show other aggravating factors were involved, such as the killing was premeditated. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled by the court.Wolf said he is waiting until he reviews the pre-sentencing investigation report before he determines how many years he will seek against Jordan.Wolf told the court that he would have entered into evidence three confessions made by Jordan, one in Nevada, after his arrest if the case had gone to trial. The confessions taken here were video taped at the courthouse in which Jordan admitted to shooting Thompson with a .16 gauge shot gauge and then to shooting a 30-30 rifle twice, the second time by taking aim, which was the shot that killed Thompson, according to previous reports.He also confessed to taking the keys to the Mustang from Thompson’s pocket that day, according to Wolf. In Bender’s model, they become fertilizer.
