Tbe case of Robert Price, the Bennettmarried man charged with attempting tooutrage Miss Hattie Swanson, at herhome, Twenty-seventh and E streets,this city, was begun before Judge Chapman and a jury this morning. The girlwas on the stand the greater part of themorning. Her evidence was given verystraight-forwardly, swearing positivelythat on that day Price had attempted tocommit rape upon her by jumping onher when she went into a bedroom afterdefendant’s hat, Price having called onher while her parents were avray fromhome. She sw’ore positively that shedid not consent to criminal intercoursewith defendant, but that he threw her onthe bed, and only by her superhuman efforts and her jumping through a screen that she escaped. If the girl is telling what is untrue, as the defendant asserts, she tells a pretty straight story, and stuck to it through a rigid cross-examination. Mr. Stearns appeared for the state;and Messrs. L. C. Burr nnn J. S. Bishopfor the defendant.Price admits that he had criminal relations with the girl, but says that it was with her consent. He has a number ofwitnesses from Bennett who will testify that the girl is of bad reputation, andthat she has had intercourse with a number of Bennett young men. They have one witness also who will give some startling evidence. She is a neighbor of the Swansons, and is named Mrs. Roberts. She will swear that she could see from her room into the Swanson housewhere the couple were; that she saw Hattie drop off her skirt and saw the young couple in the act; that she rapped with her knuckles on the window pane of her room and that Hattie got up and pulled down the bliud. Mrs. Robert’^ evidence is directly contradictary to that of the prosecuting witness, and the jury will have tough time of it to decide which is telling the truth. The case will be finished this afternoon.*
