Murderin WewaBy Valerie NienbergNews Herald Writer747-5074 / vnienberg@pcnh.comWEWAHITCHKAA woman wanted in a capital murder case in Mississippi was captured in Gulf County Monday afternoon.Emily Simmons, 50, also known as Emily Jackson, was arrested in Wewahitchka with a loaded derringer in her possession, said Sheriff Michael Hammond.He said Simmons did not attempt to use the weapon during the arrest.“She didn’t have time,” he said. “(Deputies) took care of her very efficiently.”Simmons and her son, Billy D.Ray, 24, are the prime suspects in the March 2002 murder of Patricia A. Billiot, 42, ofCorinth, Miss.Billiot wasfound dead inher home of multiple stab wounds to the neck. The homeshowed no signs of forced entry. “(SimmonsEmilySimmons is a suspect in a murder in Mississippi in March 2002.andRay) were friends of the victim,” Corinth Police Chief Ned Cregeen said Monday. Some of the pair’s actions after the murder, such as a spending spree and a quick departure out of town, led authorities to focus on them as suspects, he said.Robbery is believed to be the motive for the killing. About $5,000 was taken from Billiot’s home.The turn of events that led to Simmons’ arrest began Friday in Dothan, Ala., where Ray was arrested. A waitress at a restaurant there heard him bragging about the killing and called police, Cregeen said.“She heard that this guy had been saying he’d committed this murder along with his mother,” he said.Ray was arraigned on a capital murder charge Monday in Corinth and is being held without bond. Simmons is being held in the Gulf County Jail pending extradition to Mississippi. Both could face the death penalty if convicted.The Daily Corinthian in Corinth, Miss., contributed to this report.
