Hershey, a deaf and dumb man, was arrested Wednesday, morning, charged with the theft of a gold watch belonging to L. J. West, of Coshocton, on the ninth of November. Confronted with evidences of his guilt, the man entered a plea to that effect when brought before Mayor Hamilton of that city.According to the statement given out j ^ by the police, Hershey went there from Orrville and worked side by side with L. J. West at the Beach factory. The ninth of November ovas a warm day and West laid off his vest, while he was engaged in his toil. It is claimed that Hershey took the time piece from the pocket, departed in haste for Orrville, where he shifted cases, taking it from the gold case and placing it in one of silverine. Wednesday he - went back to the factory, displaying a new watch. Suspicion was immediately aroused, as the time piece seemed to have a movement like the missing one.West got his watch back intact after the authorities sent the silverine case back to D. W. Steiner, jeweler here, who had the gold case. The watch cost $35 several years ago.Mayor Hamilton late Wednesday♦sentenced Hershey to pay a fine of $25 and costs and to serve ten days in the Columbus work house.Hershey dropped into Mr. Steiner's jewelry store Monday and showed a watch which he wanted to trade. The case, a gold one, was old and worn. Mr. Steiner persuaded him to keep the movement, which was good, and tradednu1lt;htticii(him a silverine case, not suspecting 1tanything crooked.Later he received word from Coshocton that the watch was stolen and re- 1 turned the gold case.Hershey is a brother of Miss Laura Hershey, the girl who died under suspicious circumstances last summer northeast of town.
