“MINUTEMEN TO COMBAT GRIME►Organization Formed atLa OrosBe.La Crosse—Minutemen—ready at any time to barricade Western Wisconsin highways in an effort to capture bandits—will be organized in six counties under a plan an-announced here by Sheriff- A. F.Riley and J. M. Btorkerson, superintendent of the telephone company.Deer hunters, chiefly, ex-service-men and other experienced shooters living at strategic points in . La Crosse, Trempealeau, Jackson, Monroe, Vernon and Crawford counties will co-operate with the sheriffs through the members of the Local Ownership Telephone association in protecting their communities against bank robberies, and other major crimes.When a crime Is reported in any of these counties,: the telephone companies will call out the.Minute-men who promjptly will blockade the various highways in all six counties. They will stop ail cars and search the suspicious ones, so that it will be almost impossible for daylight robbers to make a get-away.Co-operating organizations in planning the Minutemen system are the Rotary clubs of La Crosse and Black River Falls, the business men of Alma, and Arcadia in Trempealeau county, and Kiwanis clubs of Sparta, Viroqua and Prairie du Chlen. Committees of five will be named v to act with the sheriff of each county in laying out plans.Three to ten Minutemen in each village and city will be sworn in as volunteer deputy sheriffs, subject to the call of their sheriff. They will supply* their own ammunition andfirearms.
