VOL. XXII. NO. 41.GANGSTERS BEATUP BLIND MAN, ESCAPE WITH $3,600RBrutal Attack Made In HomeiAt Early Hour LastSSunday MorningNOTHING KNOWNEOF IDENTITYRevenge or Plain Brutality IsAssigned MotiveAnother hideous crime was added to the annals of modern gangsterism when three thugs entered the home of Mr .and Mrs. Tony Polich on Ernestine Ave. betweenthe hours of one and two Sunday morning and brutally beat up the aged man and his wife and stole $3,600 from a trunk in the house. The robbers escaped without leaving a definite clue to their identity.Polich, his wife, 12 year old boy and 14 year old girl were asleep at the home when the thieves arrived. The comers first made theirarrival known by kicking in the kitchen door of the four room house. In quick order one of them haul-* ed the old man who has beenblind for several years out of bed, dragged him to the kitchen and proceeded to beat him into unconsciousness with a pistol despite the pleas of the helpless man to take what they wanted and leave him alone.Another of the unbidden guests drew a gun on the Polich boy and told him if he moved he would “croak him.” In the meantime Mrs. Polich was putting up the best resistance she could but to no avail. The third robber went straight to a trunk in the bedroom, pried the lock off and took the money out. It was evident that he knewwhere the money was hidden as he lost no time in locating it andasked no questions about the hiding place. The three of them then left thehouse, hesitating only long enough to debate the advisability of going back and “finishing up” on the old man. One advised quick depature and it was made.Night Chief Carl Killion heard the screams of the family some few blocks away. He hurried to the scene and found the old folksin a pitiable condition. Night Watchman John W. Shadowen arrived a few minutes later butnothing could be found to identify the robbers or their way of departure.ClDIt is reported that this sum of 1money, the savings of a life time, had been recently drawn from aju bank, following the collapse of the Benton State Bank. The thievesapparently had either personal information or a “hot tip” of the transaction. It was believed for many hours that Polich would not recover from the attack. He did not fully gain consciousness until Monday morning. At present it is expected that he will recover in a few days.
