Williams said he found Sixth avenue blocked and went on to Seventh and it was likewise blocked.■Ho was questioned, who he saw at Seventh a,vemie waiting to cross and he told of meeting the negro service car driver, known as ‘‘Cadillac Red,” and inquired if he saw the car, and was informed that he saw it turn down South Ninth; -Williams related that he told the negro that the men in the car shot at him and he was after them, and got him to turn around and use the car for giving further chase in that direction. At this point Green and Horton appeared, and-the negro is said to have remarked “There comes that car back, now/’. This is where they are said.to have been intercepted.Williams was taken over , the rest of the transaction with reference to driving the car to the Mecca Cafe and to the undertaker’s office, the meeting of Officers Patterson and Sparks. He corroborated Officer Patterson’s evidence given Thursday .and said search was made for the two missing men until midnight, the hour he went off from work. I-Ie denied cursing ml abusing Pipkin and Sims; he said they were drunk, that the smell of liquor on them and in the car was verv evident.directed to the point that it was caused by the car being driven over the railway tracks when i,t turned south at Fifth avenue. Officer Williams declared he heard the report of a blowout and the car , bumped noisily down towards Collin street in its flight.On re-direct cross-examination Fred Upchurch-asked Officer Williams ifho ever was or is now a member of the Ku Klux Klun and he answered in the negative.R. F. Shaw, Frost banker, was introduced as a character,witness. He testified knowing Spurgeon Williams ten or twelve years and that his general reputation for being a peaceable and law-abiding .man was good. On cross-examination Mr. Shaw stated he is a good friend to the family and never heard of anything to the contrary to what he testified to on direct examination.S. F. Jones, Frost farmer, testified he had known Suprgeon Williams for twelve or fifteen years, and that his general reputation was good.Mr, Jones was asked by the prosecution if he knew anything about Williams’ conduct as a peace officer in Corsicana. He stated he had known nothing of it.T. S. Konnett, Frost merchant, testified practically the same as Mr. Jones. He has known Spurgeon Williams for five years.W. L. Thompson, Frost merchant, testified similarly to the witnesses that preceded him. He had, known •Spurgeon Williams seven years.R:. L. Templeton, Frost merchant and farmer, also stated Spurgeon' Williams' reputation for peace and law-abiding was good. He had known him for fifteen years.J. I\t. Sharp and J. M. Cole were used as defense character witnesses.At press hour I. A. Sanders was on the stand. A number of other character witnesses will be used by the defense. ■' The State also will use a number of character witnesses.
