I D. P. Mattingly, a farmer living i»! ;tbe neighborhood of Cumback, was] arrested about noon today by Pat! ’McCrisaken,, chief of police! It being i alleged that he forged a check oslt; Prank Emmlck for flO. which he!itried to get cashed at the People’s] y national hank about 11 o'clock this j 3-morning. I n■ Mattingly appeared at the bank! o; and presented a check purporting to ! a: have been made by Frank Emmlck in favour of one John Davis for $150.; The check was dated November 18 i but did-not say what the money wasfor. It bore the signature of Frank , ’Emmak.” r*The bank officials glanced at the ] signature of Mr, Emmick and at once isaw: that It was not In the usual II rstyle in which he signs his name. I [They became suspicious of the check- n* tand informed Mr, Mattingly that ] k they would call Mr. Emmlck over thettelephone and see if the check was ‘good, but Mattingly said that Em-mack was not at home and that he had come to town with him this! ‘morning. Mattingly left the* check at! the bank and told the hank officials \1that he ,would go out on the street;Hiand find Mr. Emmlck. He never re-;TSiturned. The bonk employes then got* busy and by comparison found that - ylt; the writing on the check was similar; to the signature of D. P. Mattingly, [Iwhose signature they bad in the signature book. Mattingly was not •known by the bank employes.TJ20 police -were notified to be on? Ftie lookout for Mr. -Mattingly and fcfter quite a search Pat MiCrlsaken arrested him as he was starting for his home near Cumback.
