Rockton Company Purchases Firmi The Browntown Silica plant and a subsidiary firm, the Hanover Silica plant, have been purchasedby Lyle T. Manley, Rockton, 111.The firms formerly were owned by the Palmer Brothers firm ofHartland and Edgerton.Both plants presently are closed for repairs and remodeling. The Browntown plant has been employing seven and the Hanover plant three.Officials of the Lyle T. Manley Co., the name under which both plants now will operate, today said they are not prepared at the present time to say to what extent the plants will be expanded.Contacted at Rockton, firm officials said the transaction was a proprietorship and does not include the name of the company. They said that was the reason it ! will be known as a part of theLyle F. Manley Co.Manley also is head of Manley Aviation, Manley farms and theCMW Drilling Co., an oil drilling firm.The Browntown plant was purchased by the Palmer Brothers in i 1939 when the former White Rock j Silica Co. went into bankruptcyproceedings. No figures on p u r-chase price were released by the Manley firm officials. The company was purchased in 1939 for $13,000. Estimates at that time were that the original cost of construction was in excess of $300,000.The silica deposit there was discovered by Dr. Robert Wehenn, Rockford, and developed originally in 1928 by the W. J. Newman Co.. Chicago. It later became the property of B. E. Buckman and Co. of Madison.Engineers for the Lyle F. Manley Co. have been here supervising repair and remodeling activities.
