California is proud of her new rank in the Indianapolis Police Department after having earned it through her years of dedicated service with the law enforcement agen-'' ' * -Close friends, co-workersand admirers agreed that no one was more deserving of the step up than the charming west-side lady. She and a fellow department worker, Mrs. Thelma Graves, were the first Negro women to be promoted to the high rank.During her 21-year association with the police force, Sgt. Sansbury has worked in many capacities. She is presently an investigator for the juvenile bureau.One of 14 women on theforce, she was a patrolwoman before her promotion. Sgt. Sansbury said she has enjoyed working as a law agent especially in her current capacity. Previously, she workedin latent prints and identification. Here she would classify and read fingerprints.I didn’t have any children and I felt I would be of service, the friendly Sgt. Sansbury related when giving her reason for joining the department. She would advise other women to join the police department.I think it is a promising field for Negro girls - especially those with two years of college. They now even havetwo policewomen assigned to a sector car ( a car in certain districts), Sgt. Sansbury related.In her present job, she re-SGT. THELMA SANSBURYceives complaints from civilians and requests for investigations from district cars. Oftentimes it is necessary for Sgt. Sansbury to go to homes or schools to confer with the juveniles.She gets to know some of the offenders personally through interrogation and notes that what happens to a child dependson the seriousness of the charge. She consults with the court or superior officers sincea lot of children are on probation. Sgt. Sansbury averages over 40 cases a month.One of the most satisfying things is seeing some of the young people later on and having them show you pictures of their family. This is staying on friendly terms with them,Sgt. Sansbury pointed out happily.She drives an unmarked police car which varies in colors. I am very grateful to the mayor, chief of police, my many friends and civilians who were indirectly responsible for by obtaining this promotion, sheadded.Well qualified for her promotion, Sgt. Sansbury attended police promotional schools and consistently received the highest grade for any woman except for the last time the test was given, when she ranked second.In addition, Sgt. Sansbury studied police administration courses at Indiana University. She was graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. Her working days vary with 28days and 28 nights.Social and civic wise, Sgt. Sansbury was founder of the International Girls Aid League, a three-year-old organizationwhich aids deserving girls through scholarships. She is a charter member of the Cameo Club and is also affiliated with the National Council of Negro Women, Holy Angels Catholic Church, and the Holy Angels Women’s Club.She has also been working TURN TO PAGE 6
