Charles Lewis by a sheep-erder named Raphael Venave-es. Mr. Lewis has a sheep ange between Aztec and Lapla-a and lives at the ranch, a long istance from other neighbors, le was away on a hunting trip ,t the time. The Mexican who yas herding sheep for Johnny Smith, had already served one erm in the penitentiary for rap-ng a ten year old girl.The sheepherder, after trying o break into a home in Aztec, vent to the home of Charles .ewis, a sheepman living near tztec, Tuesday night and finding dr s. Lewis alone broke in. He iccused the Lewis family of iwing him either money or heep. Mrs. Lewis had a shotrun and attempted to use it but ound it to be unloaded. The nraged man beat her most brut-dly then took her off up the anyon and left her, perhaps hinking her dead.Mrs. Lewis, suffering extreme-y with her injuries and the cold, 'ound her way to the Nute Jack lome where she was cared for jhtil she could be taken to Mrs. Rich Whitney’s house.The herder took Mrs. Lewis ibout a mile from her home and me ground where the assault was made showed a terrible struggle. Mrs. Lewis’ eyes were swelled shut and she Kid to hold them open with her fingers to walk the nearly four miles to the Nute Jack home. She could not see to keep the road and had to walk down a sand arroya.Early next morning Sheriff Geo. Blancett and a posse of men began a search for the fugitive who was traced into the hills beyond Laplata.The sheriff and party followed the sheepherders trail all day Wednesday and had to stop at night. The herder was traveling afoot all the time! Thursday morning the trail was taken a-gain and before noon the criminal was located in the loft of an abandoned house oh the Laplata near the state line. He started to resist the officers and posse and a shot was fired by someone that pierced the abdomen of tiie fugitive. He then surrendered and Sheriff Blancett brot him to the San Juan Hospital at Farmington where hir wounds were treated and he is reported to be in a serious condition.A large number of men were
