Convicted Gambling BossJohn Bazzano SentencedPITTSBURGH (UP!) - Convicted gambling syndicate boss John Bazzano and five other men faced sentencing today in federal court.To be sentenced along with Bazzano were former Gairton Mayor John Matz, former district magistrate Regis Ward, former constable Peter Orsini, former Elizabeth Police Chief Raymond Poljack and former Gairton Police Chief David Guffey.Bazzano. son-in-law of reputed local crime leader Anthony Ripepi, was convicted March 31 in U.S. District Court The other five were convicted of taking protection payoffs from the Bazzano ringTwo other officials wereacquitted of similar charges, but five other men entered guilty pleas during the trialThe Bazzano ring, according to the government, controlled an illegal numbers game throughout the southeastern part of Allegheny County and in other southern counties reaching to the West Virginia state line.The six were to be sentenced by U.S. District Chief Judge Herbert P Sorg.
