VOLUME XXXIVPIUTE MANRussell Lawre nee, the JewelTea Salesman, May Have Been Robbed or Killed.Gov town aFinding of a Jewel Tea Company truck, used by Russell D. Lawrence, of LaPorte, with a blood-stained handkerchief in the rear of the truck and two large bullet holes in the hood, has started authorities in three counties to work on the theory that the LaPorte salesman was murdered.Lawrence was last seen in North Judson last Thursday night shortly after * o'clock, when he ate supper at Mrs. Casey’s railroad restaurant. A short time before this he was working on the engine of his truck in front of Frank Thonert’s house at the edge of town, Mr. Thonert assisting him with the work. When Earl Schuyler and family returned home from the basket ball game, shortly after 10 o’clock, they observed the truck standing in front of their house, but thought little of the matter, tninking that the driver had encountered engine trouble and walked back to town for assistance. Evidently the car disappeared from here shortly after this as it was seen about two hours later on the roadside, about two miles this side of Valparaiso. To add to the mystery A1 Farmer, Mrs. Roney and Mrs. Thonert, and others living in the vicinity of the Schuyler place at the edge of North Judson, where the truck had been standing, heard two shots fired in that direction. This was around 10 o’clock.It was learned that Lawrence bad worked in Knox on Wednesday and that he had stayed at the Hotel Fitz there that night, leavingeariy Thursday morning for North Judson, where he called on his customers durlng^ie day.or tn© finding or the truck near Valparaiso by officials of that city and they informed Mrs. Lawrence of the affair. She fainted when told that her husband had disappeared.Friday morning a pile of groceries, teas, spices and other articles were found at the side of the road in front of Earl Schuyler's home, where the truck was seen standing the night before. Lawrence is thought to have had between $300 and $400 in money on his person at the time of his disappearance.
