A 11 Hawley, detective for -the Denver d r I Rio Grande Western Railway, and i 91 Deputy United States Marshal for thi;I Territory, arrived in this city, havinj 11 in his charge a prisoner, a touqi i I man named Frank Field, alias Franl i I Howard, who was arrested lsst Moodaj a I at Cheyenne on a requisition issued bj t I Governor Murray on Governor Halo o 11 Wyoming. The charge is that o I grand larceny, committed in-this citj f I on or about September 25th of this year . I It appears that Field was stopping a 51 Mrs. Crock well’s residence in this city . at No. CO West Third South atreet, li 1 September, while a Mrs. HendersoiI I was also a boarder at tbe house. Mrs I Henderson went to Logan for severs’ I weeks, and finally concluded to maki] I her homo there and sent word to i ! Field assisted in packing i ' I trunk, which contained a bronze clockI valued at $00, a iancy, hand-painted I lamp valued at $25, a pair of field ’ I glasses valued at $25, children’s and I other clothing valued at $100, and ■ I few other odds and ends. Alter theI trunk was packed,Field said he would I have the trunk checked on hia ticket I to Logan, is he was going there, and I thus tho expense of freight would be I saved to Mrs. Henderson. While Field I went up town, Mrs. Hitchcock sent the I trunk with other household goods to I the Utah Central depot by Palmer, tho 1 expressman. When Field returned, I he found that Mrs. Hitchcock had the I bill of lading, and obtaining it from I heron tho pretense that he would take I the trunk on his ticket, he went to the depot and securing the trunk took I it from tho freight house to the baggage j room. There he opened it,took out the I bronze clock and taking it to a pawn-j broker on West Temple street, got a I watch in exchange for it. Ho then I checked the trunk to Provo and pawned I it for his fare. The trumc remained at ] Provo till yesterday when the price of I the ticket was paid on it and it was I brought to this city. Field remained I around Provo tuning pianos for awhile then came back to Balt Lake. He pawned his watch for a ticket to Ogden and went to Evanston, then to Green River, then to Rawlins, then to Lar* araie and then to Cheyenne. Here he obtained a job of taking a lot of cattle to Chicago, and on his return to Cheyenne was arrested last Thursday by T. Jeft Carr, Superintendent of tho Rocky Mountain Detective Association at the instance of Capt. Hawley, who had kept a close watch of the movements i of the fugitive and who had sent decoy letters and photographs leading to tho capture. Mr. Carr telegraphed last week that he had made the arrest and on Saturday last Governor Murray issued a requisition, which was duly honored on Monday last on Capt. Haw-ley’B arrival in Cheyenne. Capt. Hawley took the prisoner to Denver and thenco by way ot the D. lt;£ R. G. camo to this city.Fields claims to be a tuner of pianos, and while here succeeded in accomplishing the ruin of about a dozen in-strumonis. He also professed to study law, and under tbe guise of a student, borrowed s number of law books from M. M Kaigbn, which he conveniently forgot to return. It Is also said that ho borrowed a saddle from Mr. Pancake and sold it for $10, pocketing the money and tailing to remember the owner's rights in the property. Somebody wants him for forgery, some one else lor getting away with tome washing machines, and it may be that quite a number of other charges will be preferred against him before tho last is heard ot hitn. His case will be brought to the attention of the grand jury to-day. Hu claim* to bu well con-nectcd, Is far from being uneducated or of ill-appearance, and is a smooth talker.
