Sheppard, is accused of the first degree murder of his pregnant wife, Marilyn, 31, who was clubbed to death last July 4.The trial started Oct. 18.Protesting the “Huge, inordinate mass of detail” on the case published by the newspapers, Rabbi Rosenthal declared:“There is a constant mirror held up to our youth of alleged sordidness, infidelity and murder. Our newspapers have ran amuck in this matter of squeezing out every bit of sensational testimony.“There still remains large areas of testimony dealing with intimate sexual matters. Is this, too, to be given the same concentrated treatment?”The rabbi asserted it was not a mei good argument to say “this is what the people want.” j °*“People want many things,” he| continued, “they want some things * }c that are not good for them. It is;®1*3 not for us to satisfy them on their thei lowest instincts.” I to*“It is our hope.” he said, that newspapers will prove to be their“Jogo itheithaivellt;liftvoudm;Thait, inganddepBit, 1 edy not and mir fee]melistown best censors.
