The Democrat from the start thought Mr. Charles E. Karmire entirely innocent of any guilt in the Vancleavo scandal. It refused to open its columns and to become a party .to a controversy which it thought should be wholly settled by the courts and not be tried by newspapers. Mr. Karmire has lived a life of honor and truthfulness in thi^ community and in his social and business relations no man stands higher. This position he has attained not in a day, but as the result of many years of upright conduct with the world. The charge against him was not believed to be true and his excellent character came to his relief to set at rest this malicious charge. Thrice armed is he who hath his quarrel just was fully exemplified in this case. Innocent of the cruel and brutal attack of this depraved woman, and having much at stake Mr. Karmire felt that his duty compelled him to resort to the law and that it would vindicate him. Inthis he was not mistaken as tho sequel shows. His friends believed that he was being made the victim of blackmail at a time when it was imagined that he would bleed in order to hush the scandal. The trial came on this week and Mr. Karmire was ready to prove his innocence and to fasten the guilt where it belonged. The trial lasted a week and was hotly contested, and it afford^ us pleasure to say that Charley Karmire came out of it as ho went in, without a single cloud upon his character and a vindicated man. The woman who attempted the hellish persecution was proven to be abandoned and a wretch unworthy of belief in any respect. The jury found that she was a bad egg and should be sent to the penitentiary where she can’t annoy respectable people for the next twelve months atleast. The example set by Mr. Kar-mire in his prompt prosecution of this case will do much good in this community, as these blackmailing cases have become entirely too frequent of late years. In common with the whole community, the Democrat congratulates Mr. Kartniro on his complete vindication and it congratulates the jury upon its keen sense of duty and justice.
