WORLDAffidavit* Printed by that Paper Involving Several Men of the CountyThe investigation into the lynchingof the Low mans was revived again onMonday, when a warrant was swornout by officer J. P. Hart, /or the arrest of Mrs. Lucy Mooney, wjjo madean affidavit implicating Ha ijy,thelynching of the Low man s.The revival of this investigation hasbeen brought about by the stories!H-f HfS {Hi\f\ fin the New Y orkWorld' la t Friday and Sunday, inwhich certain affidavits are given, oneby Mrs. Mooney and one by oneCharles E. Lee. The World has hada reporter in the county for the pastweek investigating the lynching, andreported to have secured certainaffidavits which are published in theWorld.Mrs. Lucy Mooney, made the sworntat.merit identifying Sheriff Robinson, testified that Jailor Rupert Tailor headed the mob of lynchers andcame up the stone steps to the women’s department with a lantern inhand and unlocked the cell door ofBertha Lowman. ‘Sheriff Robinsontook the woman from the Cell,” readsthe statement, “und he was accompanied by A. I). Sheppard, one of hisdeputies and J. Percy llart (privateofficer for Governor McLeod) and;, Road Officer John B. Salley.I“P»ertha Lowman began crying when she got opposite my door,” con- itinues the affidavit, “and when shewas at the top of the staircase sheIlt;heard her brother screaming and she • cried louder. Sheriff Robinson told,hush.' Robinson was behind,Salley in the lead and Hart and Taylor behind the woman. I was looking-Iright at Sheriff Robinson when tin*shots down stairs were fired, and inwas up stairs. I know all of the officers and I am cocksure that I can notbe mistaken as to these being themen who took Bertha Lawman fromher cell on the morning of October* IMrs. Mooney gives Augusta, Ga.,as her home, but states that she hasrresided in Elton ton for seven yearsand that her step-father has helpedsthe Aiken officers in raids. “SheriffRobinson has often been at ourhouse,” Mrs. Mooney swears. The wo-Jman further testifies that the sheriff { caled on her at the jail and asked her if she knew’ anything about the lynching, “ami I told him I recognizedthimself, Taylor and Salley.” Th*sheriff turned deathly pale and deniedthat he was with the lynchers,” statesthe woman.kMrs. Mooney further swears thatEugene R. Buckingham, of Ellentoncalled on her at the jail and asked herKfMooney to say that she was asleep at the time of the lynchers visit.
