—ui xne retail drug business in Sj-racuse.Has Great Growth'.Both the companies are outgrowths of the United Drug company of Boston, a manufacturing concern which has had a miraculous growth since its formation in 1903. At that time fourteen employes manufactured the entire Output of the concern. 2srow they employ 1,300 in flic Boston plant alone and have an annual output of 510,000,099.Besides, the company has*a warehousein Chicago and a branch factory in Toronto. • .Since they started into the retail busiiiess they have secured it chain of stores extending through the eastern part of the country. Close .to one hundred retail drug stores arc operated by them.While the alarm felt: at the possibility of a monopoly being established in this city was general In .the down-. town section to-day, a few of the older; and long established druggists were inclined to view the matter with, indifference. These men declared that their class of business would not be'affected by the new combination. 'Among those to voice this sentiment was David Stolz of Stolz Brothers. He said to a .Herald reporter-this morning:“The druggists are divided Into two classes. In the first are those who conduct strictly a drug business and cater to the prescription trade. This class of druggists does not sell patent medicines. • Their trade is usually established and they are not afflcted by the combination.'-‘The second class is the' so-called merchandising druggists. The.. best example of this type of store are the very stores conducted by the. combination. They do not cater to the ure-scrlption trade and could not handle it if they did. As far as I am concerned the entering of the trust into Syracuse does not make any'difference to me.Another druggist who took this view of tho situation was Willard L, Brown of Brown Dawson.Not Real Drug Stores.“Our trade is an old established trade among the families o£ the city. We manufacture a great deal and sell to the • physicians of the city. The combination stores couldn't get our trade. They have made no effort to get control of our store, for if they did they couldn’t hold the trade that we have now. The combination stores are not in truth drug stores. They -are really merchandise stores.7*
