ARREST NEGRO IN CONNECTION WITH MURDERCharge John Hackett With Suspecting of Knowing Something of Brutal Killing of Mary HcVney.Believing that they have in their possession evidence which will lead to the identity and conviction of the murderer of Mary Hackney in Cumminsville several weeks ago, Detectives Pflug and Heuftlein arrested last night John Hackett, a negro, who lives in the vicinity of the Hackney home, whom they will hold on a charge of suspicion until they trace their clew.The detectives Will sweat him this morning. This man’s movements have been watched by the officers working on the case for days. It was thought the better plan to allow him to have his liberty until they wanted to get his story.The officers have been watching him night and day, and at 11 o'clock last night, believing they had sufficient evidence to warrant holding him, started out to his home in the police automobile from Central Police station.Negro Taken From Bed.The,, negro . fpwnd in bed in. his room in if‘ how*e c** Canal ridge,i not far from the scene of thtf arorder. He wa^ hurried back to the statlot^ and while waiting for the officers to ^Jold jiVqd-ference, for five minutes made his best efforts to appear cool and collected-In spite of this, however, he showeddistinct signs of nervousness. When hewas called to go to his cell, though he had not been told what he was wanted for, his knees shook as he followed Detective Pfiug out of the room.Hackett ,ts a negro of rather small physique. He is coal black and walks with a side swing. ‘ One arm hangs three inches lower than the other and he carries his head far to one side. He has big thick lips and small blood-shot eyes. He was dressed In old and dirty clothes.After the officers have questioned the negro-this morning he will be taken to the office of Coroner COe, who will examine him closely as a witness in tne inquest, which has not been concluded.The police refused to give out last night the specific information on which they arrested the negro, saying they would first question him and then turn him over to the coroner. Tlaey declared, however, that they had sufficientfcevidence to warrant holding him as a witness.
