Horse Thieves Abroad, j_ ilt;A Crown Point Liveryman Done 'I'p in Slick Shape. !About-11 o’clock a. m. Monday !a slicklydresst d dudish-looking , chap about 20 years of ago, ligl t j hair and mustache, 5 ft. 4 or 54\ inches in height, and of about 140 ; pounds in weight, entered Ed*! Muzzall’s livery barn and hired a*; horse and buggy, saying he want-; ed to drive out to the Ileenan place, about a mile and a half southwest of town. He got the I rig, a horse valued at 885 or $90 ' and a new single buggy and drove away, and that was the last thatj j was seen of him or the vehicle, j j Along about 4 p. m. Mr. Muzzall ;! got uneas}’, as the stranger failed 1 to return, and getting on a horse ! he rode out to the Heenan place to make inquiries, and there learned that no such person had called there, and then a general search ' was instituted for him in all direc-! j lions. Telegrams were sent out j ! and also printed postal cards, des-! cribing thief and rig, but up to Wednesday evening no tidings or : even a trace lt;f the missing thief I and his stolen property had been j secured. Mr. Muzzall rode for I two days, striking Schererville, !| Dyer* St. John, Brunswick, Ilam-; mond, Yalparaish, Laporto and other points, but at none of these places had such a rig or driver been sighted, and it appeared as though the earth had opened near here and swallowed him. Mr. Muzzall estimates his loss at about $200, and hereafter will keep ft close lookout for all strangers thatocannot give a straight account of themselves when ordering rigs at his stable.Hoi *se thieves are becoming quite ; numerous throughout the northern part of the state at present, and it looks as though a regularly organized gang was working the territory lying adjacent to Chicago. People should be on their guard and prepare themselves for a visit from these scalawags. They are liable to enter vour barn and ride oft’ with your best horse while yousleep. The most puzzling part of this latest theft is the utter inability of the officers to get the slightest trace of the fugitive. If he had made oif in any direction, it seems hardly probable that he should have escaped the view of some one, but such seems to have been the case, and the officers are some* what puzzled thereby, j Muzzall has offered a reward of , $100 for the apprehension of the ; thief and rig.
