Being a lively, attractive girl, a young mannamed Peter Hughes, an employe at the Ohio Falls Car Works, paid her assiduous attention, and finally, as she says, under promise of marriage, succeeded in accomplishing her ruin. She notified him of the fact that she would soon become a mother, and begged him, with tears in her eyes, to carry out his promise of marriage and save her from disgrace. She says be put her off, and procured a medical preparation for her to take in order to produce abortion. She took the preparation and for two days lay at the point of death. Yesterday evening the authorities of Jeffersonville sent her to the pest house of that city, which, by courtesy, they call a hospital. She may possibly recover. But the author of her ruin, who is in jail, should not escape eight or ten years in the penitentiary, and even such a term would be a mild punish ment for so infamouB a crime. The poor, ruined girl has reputable relatives in this city.
