The circmuRtances iu this case are as follows; Some months ago Frederi k Mertens, a well-known boat builder oi til's city, and atthat time a candidate, receiving a largevote for councilman, was walking through South Cumberland aim seeing Mr. .Joseph B ihnert at his door no costed lutn with a friendly salutation, when upon Bohucrt ran into his houslt;* and seizing a revolver mshed out again ana assaulted Mr. Mertens, firing twiee, though fortunately missing hisman. The testimony of Mr. Mat ter R whs to the effect that up to the time ot the assault he had been on the moat Ir endly terms with Bohnert The counsel for defense did uot deny the assault, and admitted the shooting, but denied the responsibili'y ot their client on the plea that he was insane at the time the attack was made, and for this purpose introduced several witnessesto prove the fact.Tne State was represented byMessis. Johns McCleave e ud Win. M.Price, and the tiavessei by Messrs. Thos E. Gon ler and Hubert, 11. Gor~don.
