Richard NixonfWith Arkansas State Police .. _ . 4Newton County ManKilled During ShootoutWilliam Duster Campbell, aged 64, of the Vendor-Log Hall community some 10 miles south and west of Jasper, was shot and killed late Wednesday afternoon in a running gun battle with State Police.Lqbal State Police had been called to the community building at Log Hail to assist in arresting a man who had been firing a rifle, at people who were going to vote' at White Township.Capt. Billy Bob Davis, commander of Harrison District I and Sgt. Joe Brewer answered the call for assistance from county authorities.Campbell threw a rifle on the officers when they arrived. “He laid the old gun on us,” Capt. Davis said.Davis said he and Brewer tried to reason with Campbell and that persons in the crowd at the polling place said they might be able to reason with him, “but they couldn’t,” Davis stated. He had been shooting over the heads of women and children and others before officers arrived.Authorities said Campbell was believed to be mentally ill and at least one person in the crowd said Campbell was “drunk.” Davis said later he and Sgt. Brewer tried to reason with Campbell, he (Campbell) shot Dave Ricketts, a former deputysheriff, in the right leg with a .22 rifle and then made his waydown a nearby creek, shooting at the two State Police — Davis and Brewer. Campbell was trying to reach his residence about a mile away when other State Police arrived including - Lt. Jim Stobaugh, Sgt. Jim Thomas, Troopers Hansel Bradford andDon Stracner.Officers converged on Campbell and his residence when he ran across a field to his house and came out shooting the .22 rifle. Officers said he fired several rounds at them before he went back into the house andreturned with a .32 special rifle i'Which fired 30-30 ammunition, e began shooting at the oopers again. One of the 30-30 bullets barely missed Sgt. Thomas and Troopers Stracner and Bradford who were pinned down behind a shed. Officers said Campbell fired several times before he was hit.Officers were first called to Log Hall shortly after 3:00 p.m. and arrived about 4:00 p.m. Campbell was shot about 5:10 p.m.A coroner conducted an investigation and the body was sent to the state Medical Examiner for an autopsy.An investigation is continuing by the Prosecuting Attorney, the Newton County sheriff’s office and the Criminal Investigation Section of the Arkansas StatePolice.Three Arkansans Killed in CrashATOKA, Okla.
