Allen Glass of the Reno police department were shot and killed last night as they and brother officers closed in on two desperate young men at the Carlton Hotel,Following the shooting* Reno police arrested two youths identified as Daniel Blackwell* 18, and Arnold Thomassen, 22, of Seattle, Wash. One of the two, Blackwell, was wounded in the shoulder during the exchange of bullets in which the Reno officers died. Blackwell is also believed to be the one who did the shooting.The two are suspected of being the pair who held up two Reno bars at gun point earlier in the day. They were trailed to their hotel roorr at the Carlton by Officers Geach and Glass in company with Dectective Sgts. Gene Cowan and Daryl Read.Came Up ShootingThe officers knocked at the second floor front hotel room occupied by the two men. The door was locked. Thomassen opened the door standing behind it with a gun in his hand Geach and Glass went into the room, Blackwell was still in bed in a sort of adjoining bedroomt his bed facing the hotel roomdoor.As Cowan and Read wrestled the gun from Thomassen by jamming the door against him and seizing his wrist, Capt. Geach pulled the covers from Blackwell.'He came up shooting/ officers said. They added that neither Capt. Geach nor Sgt. Glass ever had a chance to draw a gun. Glass fell dead almost instantly. Shot through the abdomen, Capt. Geach was pronounced dead when he reached Washoe General hospital a few moments later.As. Blackwell opened fire, Cowan and Read also shot. One of the bullets winged Blackwell through a shoulder, inflicting a minor wound, Blackwell then threw his gun to the floor.As Blackwell and Thomcissen were taken into custody, aid was summoned for the two officers, but both were beyond help. The youths were booked td the city jail and then taken to Washoe General hospital foi treatment. They were to be transferred to Washoe County jail early this morning, where it is believed both will be charged wilh murder.3 Register in RoontHotel officials said last night that the two youths and a * Hired companion registered at the hotel Thursday for a two nights stay. At the time the three gave the names of James M, Ryba, James E. Starr and John Roberts. They listed their residence as Billings, Mont. On booking, police were unable to find any trace of the $3,400 taken in yesterday afternoon's two robberies, However, a careful search of the room occupied by the trio was yet to be made early this morning,A third man, suspected of being the companion of Black-well and Thomassen, was taken into custody about 1:15 a.m. He gave his name as Jim Brown, and age as 23. According to witnesses, Brown is believed to have been seen with a girl who was also noticed with Blackwll and Thomassen here. Brown has not admitted anything, according to Chief of Police Clayton Phillips, and will be held pending a more intensive investigation.Capt. Roy Geach, one the local department's oldest and most respected officers, served variously as patrolman and detective sergeant before being promoted to the rank of night captain this year. He was one of Reno's best known officers of the law. His wife is out of town.Sgt. Glass served with theTorce as patrolman before the war, leaving the force to enlist with the U.S. Navy. He returned to the department in 1946, having received a citation for meritorious sci vice. This year Glass was promoted from patrolman to dectective sergeant and had served in that capacity for many months. He is married.
