INDIANA GUARDS HARDENED CRIMINALitCROWN POINT, IND., Nov. 7-(UP)βIn a jail guarded by three j squads of machine Vwnners, James j (Pur) Sammons, notorious crinn inal, was held today for extraditionto Illinois to face a robbery charge.Sammons was arrested at Cedar Lake, Ind., on a charge of being | intoxicated. He was carrying a pistol and had $3,200 in his pockets.Although denying he was Sam-I mons, his identity was established lt;| through finger prints.The former convict nad been sought for two months since forfeiting a $20,000 bond to appear in Chicago to answer charges of participating in the $85,000 payroll robbery of the International Harvester Co.. in 192G.Sammons was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death in! 1904. His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, then reduced to 50 years in 1923. The next year be was released ort parole.In 1927 he was sent to Leavenworth federal penitentiary for whiskey theft and served 18 months. He was arrested in Kansas City a yearl ago. Chicago and Baltimore, where he was indicted for robbery, fought for his custody.
