MOD, GOGEBIC COUNTY, MICHIGAN, SArMURDER AT WAKEFIELD.RESam Mariinkowsky Robbed and Murdered Within 400 Feet of His Residence.Sam Martinkowsky, a well known resident of the village of Wakefield for the greater part of the past twenty years, was robbed and murdored within a short distance of his home in that place Sunday evening. It is known that he had several hundred dollars In currency on his person at the time, and robbery was the motive of the crime.Martinkowsky, who was agent for theFitger Brewing Co. of Duluth, had been at the location of the Wakefield Mining Co., south of the village, making collections of accounts during the afternoon. Deleft the Servian boarding houses at the junction of the new County Road and Cemetery Road shortly after six o'clock, going toward his home, located at the corner of the Cemetery Road and the old County Road. About half way between the boarding houses and his home he was seen by Sam Kowaleski, a blacksmith helper, who was returning to work at the Wake field mine. This was about 6:15. Probably ten minutes later, Fred Thompson, a fireman employed at the Wakefield mine, and son of Tom Thompson of Ironwood, heard a noise in the brush on the east side of the Cemetery Road as he was returning to work, but there was no outcry and he thought nothing of It. At 8:45 Joe Kameska, employed as a blacksmith at the Wakefield mine, when returning to work, saw a man come out of the brush at the junction of the Cemetery and Wakefield mine roads. As it was quite dark, he was unable to identify the man. When young Thompson was returning from the mine in the morning, he recalled the noise lie had heard in the swamp the previous evening, and as he proceeded along the sidewalk kept a watch In the brush. Ata point about four hundred feet south of the old County Road and forty or fifty feet from the sidewalk. Thompson saw the body of a man. He notified Chief of Police Woodward. The place surrounding Martin kowsky s body showed that a terrific struggle had taken place before the unfortunate man was overpowered. The conditions showed that he had been waylaid near the sidewalk, and that the fight had been continued to the spot where his body was discover ed. An examination of the body showed that Martinkowsky had recei ved a blow on the left Temple. Dr. Eddy told the News Record that he did not believe that this blow caused the man s death. He was of the opinion that death was due to suffocation, the man’s mouth and throat having been filled with moss and earth. To make sure of their quarry, because it is held that more than one person attacked Martinkowsky, the moss and earth were pushed down the man’s throat with sticks, half a dozen pieces of wood being removed from his mouth, one of which Dr. Eddy told the News Record extended six Inches down the man's throat.Sam Martinkowsky settled in Wake field nearly twenty years ago. He has resided there since with tire ex ceptlon of about three years that he lived at Crosby, Minn. He returned to Wakefield from Crosby a year ago. and was the Gogebic county representative of the Fitger Brewing Co. of Duluth. He was about forty years old, and is survived by a wife and four children. It is the opinion of the police officials that the murderers of Martin kowsky saw him on his collecting trip to the Wakefield mine location during the afternoon. Many clues are in their possession, but so far no wrrests have been made. Gogebic county has offered' a reward of $300 for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the murderers, notices to that effect having been posted by Sheriff Rowett on Wednesday.Sheriff Rowett on Thursday placed a man form Wakefield under arrest,Gogebic ities, The I the asc result o county that th ance sh electlor last foi they c all alon united resourc party, which in Go| linlshei ballotii In Gi receive oppone to att their p made a formar the exlt; other lt;and in carried the c handll this se being i betwelt; and for sta trict. terms a mosi lng mi son's i large, theles: it look tween for sin more candid a goo Minn’ the ni bellev walka dates plural more The Olllcia varloi Tuesc1st2nd v 3rd v 4th v 5th w fith w 7th w ath w1st w 2nd i 3rd » 4th v 5 th vtronvKrwiiHesseUesstWakeMareWatsCarls1st2id3rd4 th5 th •3 th 7 th SthL- IDeer end Beaver Licenses.1st2nd3rd4 th5 thIronKrwHostHeatWokMarWtttCarl
