One was a brilliant ruby the other an emerald set Marquise style.That she wore these rings on the fatal evening is assured by the testimony of tw’o of her companions at the telephone exchange, Carrie Lilie and Lucy Ingram.To a reporter for The Commercial Tribune both declared that they had seen the rings on Miss Steinway’s finger just before she left the exchange on the trip to her home on the fatal night.Miss Steinway called special attention to the jew'els, remarking of the brilliancy of the ruby. When the body was found these rings were missing.The fact that the jewels had not been returned w'lth the rest of the girl’s clothing worn on the fatal night was noticed yesterday by her family. They in turn searched the house for them.Work on Robbery Theory.Not finding them, they at once made a report of the matter to those inter ested in the case, w’ith the result that Miss Lilie and Miss Ingram both de clared she had them on when she left the exchange on the night of the murder.With the theory of robbery in view a drag-net system of searching every pawnshop in the city has been established, and if the murderer sought to realize on his ill-gotten gains unquestionably a leading clew w’lll be unearthed in a few days.Much stress is now being laid on the “man who needed a shave.’’ who rode the car with Miss Steinway Wednesday evening on the trip from Knowlton’s Comer to Winton road and Spring Grove avenue.Excite Conductor’s Suspicions.His actions on that night excited the suspicions of Conductor Limle, In charge of the car.Limle says the man had ridden on his car many times, and that he had the appearance of being a man about 88 years old, weighing approximately 150 pounds. He wore a mustache and was dressed in dark clothing.While ft is by no means certain that the man in question knows anything of the fate of the girl, it is an assured fact that he left the car with Miss Steinway. and when last seen they were the only persons in the neighborhood.Miss Steinway, as she left the car, walked to the street car waiting room at the southeast corner of the cemetery Of this Limle is certain, as he followed her with his eye after the car has passed the cornerSearch for Mar.He is unable to say whether or not the suspected man followed her or not, Despite the flimsiness of the clew, searchers are following it with a ven Stance and Detectives Callahan and Jackson spent last evening in search lng the neighborhood for the man.Every street car was watched, and, in fact, every precaution taken that the man mijht be interviewed in case he was located.Chief of Detectives Crawford said last night in regard to the matter that no arrrests would be made in case the sus peeted man, when located, turns out to be a business man or a citizen of good repute.In the event, however, the suspect is found to be a man of questionable repu tation, he will be taken to headquartersJ(Continued on Third Page.)0
