Officer Admits Quilt to the Police Board.Officer Christ Pesavento was discharged from the force last night by the police and fire commission for sleeping while on duty. The charges were preferred by Night Captain Corcoran and presented to the commission by the Chief. When called before the board to answer to the accusation, Pesavento rhade a clean breast of his stct; he admitted that he slept when he was supposed to be traveling his beat.Yes sir, I did,” said the officer, you gentlemen can do as you like about it.As this was the second time thatPesavento was before the board in a month the commissioners did not hesitate lohg in deciding to discharge him.John F. Kelly who was the Dell-Wood park policeman this summer is next on the eligible list and will now become a member of the force.The charges against Pesavento were that he had lounged on a doorstep at the rear of the Hotel Munroe last Thursday night and had slept peacefully for nearly an hour, from ! 10:40 to 11:20, while the public, whose guardian he was, went home from the theaters unprotected.The desk sergeant at the police station Wondered why Pesavento did not pull his box at 11 o’clock and in consequence of this neglect, Captain Corcoran went out to look for the officer.While his superiors were hurrying around anxious lest a thug had laid Christ in some dark alley the officer was sitting In the sTiadow of a telephone pole perfectly oblivious to all that was going on.Suddenly he awoke with a start, rubbed his eyes and pulled out his watch to see what time it was, 11:20. He made haste for the police station to expia'n matters and on Chicago street met Captain Corcoran coming for him.Where have you been? inquired the captain.“Asleep,” answered the officer sheepishly.He told his story as it wras presented to the commissioner? and when it was read to him last night he admitted that it was all true.On recommendation of Fire Marshall Langdon the board appointed Harry McGinnis, Paul Metzger and John Uuddy permanent members of the fire department. These firemen have been working on probation for several months and were found to be capable men so that their positions were made permanent.
