iss, for that matter .. .)Riverside police continue investigationRIVERSIDE (UPI) — Police said today they have questioned several persons, including students, regarding the brutal knife slaying of pretty Riverside City College freshman Cheri JoBates, 18.The girl’s body was found early Monday on a driveway near the college library. She had been stabbed in the back, arms and face, and her throat was slashed, but she had not been sexually molested.Her father had reported her missing when she failed to return home from the library Sunday evening.Cheri Jo’s car was found about 100 yards from the murder site. Officers said the igni tion key was in place but the wiring had been pulled loose. They said her killer apparently had disabled the car and theu waited in ambush.Capt. Irwin L. Cross of the Riverside Police Department said there were signs of a struggle.“The girl may have run up the driveway from the street to es-Scape her assailant. There were scuffs in the gravel on the driveway.”Cross said the girl’s purse was found under her body and a man’s wristwatch was found nearby.Cheri Jo lived with her father, Joseph B. Bates, in suburban Magnolia Center. Her mother is dead and a brother is in the Navy.
