The First Battle.Douglas, Wyo„ Nov. 2—Sheriff McDermott last night received word- of a battle fought Saturday evening between Sheriff Miller of 'We3ton*ooun-ty, .and posse and a' band JQf Indians. The sheriff was fatally shot find Deputy Sheriff Falkenburg was killed. .Three-Indians were killed. • A number of cowboys armed with riJless left yesterday morning, and another posse headed by Deputy Sheriff t.’o'ok .left in the afternoon for the Fceiic of the trouble. Another ' large posse left Lusk lust night and there is great crxi-iternent here and all sorts uf rum ora are current.Sheriff Miller And his deputies left New Castle twelve days ago to arrest the Indians, who were in onehand to the number of twenty-fiveor thirty. Ranchmen had reported that in addition to slaughtering large numbers of deer and' antelope the Indiana were killing cattle an4 sheep, stealing horses and committing other depredations. .The Indians were trailed to near the head of Beaver creek, where they had camped. All of the men, save a few old bucks, were out on the plains hunting game, and the’ camp was in charge of those who were preparing the skins and meat for future use. .Sheriff Miller took possession of the camp loaded the equipage uu live wagons and sent ■ the outfit back to New Castle in charge of Lieut. Hilton. ’ In company with Deputies^ Jas. Davis, D. IL. Johnson, R. B. Haskney and Fred Howell, the sheriff next day set out on the trail of the Indians,- Itis not known where the chase led, hut the Indians had evidently received warning of the approach of the oERqers. and attempted, to get out of the country. ✓It is not known whether an ambuscade was laid for the -officers on Lightning - creek, the scene of the battle,- or whether the Indians resisted the officers after the warrants had been read to them.- The meagre details indicate an ambuscade.
