The fire was first discovered by the employees of The I Courier-Jouunal, who were at workI in the office, and gave the alarm, but | too late to save anything. This was the ■ oldest church in town, having been | built during the summer of 1834. In! 1870 or ’71 twenty five hundred dollars*| wete spent lor repairs, and since that time the building has been kept in good j condition. The congregation had j »st i purchased a new organ, hymn books, j Sunday School library books, o., c., j which were all destroyed. The bell I attached to this church was considered by all to be the swe3test toned instrument of the kind in the State. DurineJ ing the late war it was sent to Charles-1ton to be made up into cannon, but owing to its superb qualities Was returned to the church. It was imported from Europe when the church was first built, at a cost of several hundred dollars.— The entire loss of the building, c., is estimated at 85,000. There was no insurance whatever.
