tory, and others.Attempted Abortion at J^ffanoBvUtt, Special to Die Indianapolis Journal, Jrffrrsomville, October 31.—Peter Hughes, aged about 21 years, was arrested Saturday afternoon on tbe complaint of Julia Hand, charging him with murder. It seems that Annie Hand, sister of the above, same to this city about a year ago, and went to work as a domestic in a private family on Pearl street, and being an attractive girl, made many acquaintances, and among them was one Peter Hughes, quite a beau, by the way, who has been paying eiose attention to tbe lady in question. It appears that on the 27th of this month he discovered that they hod loved unwisely. Instead of marrying the girl ho pursued a criminal course—that of attempting the crime of abortion. It is said he procured drags to be given to Hiss Hand which will undoubtedly prove fatal to the poor girl. As soon as she had taken the drags sho became deathly sick, and bas remained in a precarious condition ever slnee. She was then taken to tbe residence of a friend, where she was oared for until to-day. As the family were unable to keep her any longer, the county officials sent two men with arickety old spring wagon containing anHiedold sack filled with straw and a dirty horse-blanket to cover the poor woman. In this way the unfortunate, watched by agaping crowd, was earned from the house to the wacon and “went over tbe bills to the noor-house.” a victim of man’s hellish lust Later iu the day your correspondent visited the county Jail to see the young fellow, but tbe sheriff refused to allow any one to see him. Thesherlff says that be denies the charge, and expresses a willingness, if the girl gets well, to marry her.
