WHAT OTHERS SAYThe Justice Department’s two-day National Conference on Crime Control made it crystal clear that organized crime can continue to thrive only with the cooperation of business, labor. government and other segments of the community. Chief Justice Ear! Warren affirmed that “no crime syndicate can openly defy the law' in any of its money-making activities if the community is determined that it shallnot exist.”lie warned of the corruption stemming from the tremendous pressure brought to bear upon law enforcement officers to protect or favor individuals or particular interests. He saw this corruption extending to the police, prosecutors, courts, city councils. and higher agencies of government.Even as Mr Warren drew the link between '-ome unscrupulous or intimidated businessmen and the crime syndicates, Henry Peterson, in charge of the Organized Crime Division of the Justice Department, stated that he knew' for a moral certainty that “in the upper echelons they have more than an effective liaison between the 11.A (Longshoremen), the Cosa Nostra and the Teamsters.”The Washington conference was called to speed up implementation ofthe President’s National Crime Commission report The Chief Justice urged every state to establish a crime commission to probe its own dark cornersThe spadework has now been done How the states and cities respond could well make all the difference in the developing war on crimeThe head of his new Criminal Justice Coordinating Council calls the effort “the most sophisticated attack on crime made by any city to date ” He explains: “Heretofore we’ve just been shooting it out with criminals That may have been all right 100 years ago in Dodge City, but now we have to combine all agencies to be effective.
