CHURCH OF THE WEEK By fran smith1CEMETERY TO OBSERVE CENTENNIALUnion Baptist Cemetery, located in Price Hill, owned by Union Baptist Church, will observe its 100th anniversary on Saturday, May 30,. at 11 a.m. ,Union Baptist Church was organized July 21, 1831.In the year of 1864, .the idea came to some of the leaders of the ohurch to search out land and purchase it for a burying ground for Negro soldiers and their families. At that time, burying ground was limited to the colored people. The pastor, Rev. William P. Newman! the Board of Deacons, and the Board of Trustees, were elected by the church to be the committee to purchase this burying ground. The church authorized the committee not to exceed $5000.The first burying ground was on Colerain Pike. A proposition was presented to the committee to exchange this land for sixteen acres on Warsaw Pike which is the present location of the Cemetery.Peter Fossett, who lived on Plum St., and a member of the committee, walked from his home to Warsaw Pike and stepped off the land to the acreage. The committee faced some complications which delayed the use of the land until 1865. In the final settlement, the church purchased the Cemetery for $4000, paying $2000 down and the balance in six yearly payments at six per cent interest. The church sent letters to all colored churches ^ 0informing them that Union Baptist had purchased bury- Superintendent Secretarying ground for the people. Since then the Cemetery formed a policy not to refuse any person burial space irrespective of race, creed, color, or religion. The church instructed the committee to draw up rules and regulations.'This information was to be printed and sent to all the churches. The office of the Cemetery was located in a room on the first floor of the church. A house was provided for the sexton. The committee spent $500 to ready the land for burial. Progress was the keynote of the founders of the church and the Cemetery and the same hue and cry still prevails.. .onward and upward for progress. John Waller Mrs. Johnnie Smith
