MAN SHOT DOWN; DEAD ON STREETOne Shot le Fired—Alleged Slanderous Remarks Brings Death—Tbe InquestPaul Roman, a fireman on th* United States dredge Miller, was shot and killed yesterday afternoon about 12:30 o’clock In front of the home pf JC, Johnson, familiarly knesm a# •*8Hm/# a deputy fish and oyster commissioner and master of the commission’s fish-boat.Johnson Is charged with the killing, and will be given a preliminary Rearing tomorrow. He' surrendered to the police shortly after the tragedy and said the killing was caused by slanderous remarks made by Ruman about his (Johnson's) wife, who * witnessed the shooting.The shooting ocenrred nbar the corner of Fourteenth street and Avenue A* where the two men met. aad but one shot was fired, the ball taking effect in the brain of Roman, and death was almost Instantaneous.The dead man was unmarried and waa about 4t years of age. He Is survived by a brother and two elstera, residing In Houston.The body was tsken In charge by J. Levy £ Bro. and Coroner Canty Is holding the inquest today.
