(AP)—A member of the gang convicted for the spectacular New Year’s Eve pow-derhouse slaying near Sioux Falls 18 years ago in which an intended “squealer” was shot to death and his body blown to bits with eight tons of explosives was paroled Thursday.Gov. Sigurd Anderson approved the parole for William Nesbit on recommendation of the Board of Charities and Corrections, penitentiary officials and the state parole officer.Nesbit was convicted for the death of Floyd Parker, a 30-year-old miner with a burglary record. Parker’s 25-year-old sweetheart, shot eight times and left to die with him, managed to crawl from the explosive storehouse just before it blew up.The blast blew a 25-foot crater in the earth and caused $25,000 damage in Sioux Falls.Parker’s sweetheart, who recovered from the bullet wounds, later said the two were taken to the powderhouse after telling other members of the gang they were going to give themselves up for a $37,000 jewelry “robbery” at | Sioux City, Iowa. The jeweler was later convicted of conspiring with the men to collect insurance on his stock and later buy it back.Nesbit originally was sentenced to life, but in 1046 his sentence was commuted to 20 years. On Sept. 5, 1946, six months before he was to be freed, he escaped from the penitentiary and was recaptured May 8, 1950, living in a cave along the Mississippi River in St. Paul.The governor said today Nesbit has obtained employment in a Twin Cities department store and his parole is in accordance with the out-of-state parolee supervision in Minnesota until Nov. 15, 1955.
