Accused's WifeTells Police Of Early ShootingTRYON. N C if~The wife of an accountant accused of slaving a Tryon theater manager has told police that she was sitting in a ear with the victim when several bullets were pumped into the car.The time, police quoted Mrs. Stella S. Rhodes as saying, was at 2:30 a. m. Sunday. The spot wa* near the Trvon Cemetery, only a short distance from the Rhodes home.The victim, Edward Rail, a 31-year-old bachelor, was only wounded in the shoulder when the car was riddled by bullets at the ceme-' tery. He was given medical attention and returned to his apartmenV explaining the wound by saying he was with the wropg people,” Police Chief Lewis Lindsey said. The chief said this incident was not reported to police.About eight hours later, Ball's* body was found in the empty theater which he managed. A bultet had entered his chin and rangedupward.The next day police arrested Jesse L. Rhodes, an accountant and political figure, and charged him with Ball's murder. He has steadfastly denied that he had a part in the cemetery ambush or in Ball's second wounding.Rhodes also was charged with assault with intent to kill his wife who is about 50 and who operates a clothing store here.Police declined to say why they had arrested Rhodes and the mastery of the case was further heightened when it was disclosed that Mrs. Rhodes had been missing since the car was ambushed early Sunday.Yesterday, however, Sgt. James B. Kuvkendall of the State Highway Patrol said Mrs. Rhodes had been found and had given police a statement saying she was with Bali when he was first shot. Police declined to give any further details as well as the whereabouts of Mrs. Rhodes.
