For the Journal.The Daugherty Gate.I am puzzled to know what defense can be made in this case.— The man Joseph Vanhorn was killed Wm. W. Daugherty killed him. We all know this. Was Daugherty insane? His friends nor counsel do not claim tbia! Did he not kill him in self-defense? Noy it is not so pretended ? Had there been a quarrel between them? Oh no ! They were strangers to each other personally, and Daugherty had been hunting him coolly with the determination to shoot him.Then is Daugherty cither justifiable or excusable ? I can’t see it? It seems to possess all the rleME NTS OF A FIRST CLASS MuRDKR !It is claimed, I suppose, by Daugh erty’s friends that Vanhorn slandered his sisters. Who ever heard him do so ? Echo answers “who ?” Find the persons! We believe Vanhorn died innocent of the charge. If this is not murder in the first degree a case will be hard to find. If the law does not punish such crimes, laws are of no useto protect life!They say Daugherty is tired of being confined in jail. Well, why not be tried then and have an end to it one way or the other? The people of Howard county are not so highly excited but that he might havejustice here and a fair and impartial trial, we believe* It is not justice he wants, we think.— There’s the rub !We know he killed Vanhorn. We are not certain thatBinns killed the woman at Russiaville. Yet Philips says “God bless Daugherty,” and if “he were a yonng lady he would go for such a man.” O, shame. Speaking of the persons iu the Jail; the Tribunesaid a short time since, in substance, there were “Lieut. Daugherty, an 111-looking scoundrel named Binns,” etc. What impartiality! Binns has not money like the other, or there is some reason or other for the difference!Who can tell what moves Philips and “sich.”ZOUNDS.
