For the Journal. The Daugherty Gate.I am puzzled to know what defense can be made in this case.— Fhe man Joseph Vanhorn was tilled Wm. W. Daugherty killed dm. We all know this. Was Daugherty insane? His friends lor counsel do not claim tbia! Did he not kill him in self-defense? Vo, it is not so pretended ? Had here been a quarrel between them? Dh no ! They were strangers to sach other personally, and Daugherty had been hunting him coolly vith the determination to shootlim. Then is Daugherty either justi-lable or excusable ? I can’t see it? [t seems to possess all tub ele4ENTS OF A FIRST CLASS MuRDER !It is claimed, I suppose, by Daughjrty’s friends that Vanhorn slan-lered his sisters. Who ever heard lim do so ? Echo answers “who ?” find the persons! We believe Vanhorn died innocent of the charge. If this is not murder in .he first degree a case will be bard ;o find. If the law does uot pun-sh such crimes, laws are of no uselo protect life! They say Daugherty is tired of jeing confined in jail. Well, why lot be tried then and have an end ;o it one way or the other? The people of Howard county are not 10 highly excited but that he might lave justice here and a fair and mparlial trial, we believe. It is lot justice he wants, we think.— L'here’s the rub fWe know he killed Vanhorn.JVe are not certain thatBinns killed the woman at Russiavi lie. Yet Philips says “God bless Daugher »y,” and if “he were a young lady le would go for such a man. O, ihame. Speaking of the persons u the Jail; the Tribune said a short ime since, in substance, there vere “Lieut. Daugherty, an ill-* ooking scoundrel named Binns,” itc. What impartiality! Binna las not money like the other, or here is some reason or other for .he difference!Who can tell what moves Phil-ps and “sich.”ZOUNDS.
