AN ECCLESIASTICAL COURT.-Rev. C. 5. ElIIIIwood's Cn*o UdnsIn vcstijgntedAn ecclesiastical court convened at Grace church at 2 o’clock, yesterday, the Rev. II. T. Davis. D. D.. presiding. The committee of members of the Nebraska conference, who pass upon the charges, consists of the Rev. Messrs. Chipperfield, Marsh and Hull of this city, Pearson of Crete, Colony of Dorchester, Cobb of Friend and Prescott of Havelock. The discipline requires that the counsel be ministers and therefore lawyers are not allowed to appear in the case, but one of the complainants is John M, Stewart and as he is of right participating, G. A. Adams of this city is also present as advisory counsel, or friend of the defendant, and of course the lawyers succeed- in getting in their work to the added interest of the proceedings. It was ordered that the room be cleared of all but members of the committee, counsel and wlt-I nesses, although this took some members of the conference from the room who felt they were entitled to remain. The charges were read, the defense pleaded not guilty, and the case wa3 opened by Dr Halstead for the church. The charges against Professor Ellin-wood arise out of the management cf the Nebraska Wesleyan university, and were brought by the president and secretary of the board of trustees. There is an admitted shortage of about $26,000 but the defense claims this was incurred in the Interests of the university by Professor Ellin wood, and that it is all ex-plainable. He was interested in the Win-aom bank at University Place, and did a discount business in university warrants. This business he claims was asan agent of the university, but the prosecution claims it was on his own account. Other charges deal with such things as his Issuing warrants for sums larger than were authorized by the board; faii-t tug to cancel warrants which he paid, and using them afterward as collateralto carry on that business which he con-
