It is repeated here only because of a promise to ex plain the paragraph in this issue :THAT AniKA.N STABLE.Editor Express:Your overdrawn picture ot a visit of certain attorneys to The Mdl othce,on Saturday cvtmine.is not objectionable—(you must haveyour fun)—except your statement that I claimed loone of the gentlemen met on thestreet that the item which appeared in the Mai! “did not mean anything; that the Augean stable didn’t have any local application.1’ It did iiave. It referred to the cattle kept at tii-.*south Sixth street institution. I was surprised at any inte ligent person construing it sls applying to the attorne ;s on •dther side of the case. Perhaps some of your readers don’t know what the Augean stab.e was. As we remember the incident, away back in the marwloas. mystical, mythological days, a certain Mr. Augeaft had a stable of some .*1,000 oxen. It is told that i lie manure wasn’t removed for thirty years. Of course the stable got worse than some ofour sidewalks after the cows have had their usual nighi*s liberty. One day Hercules, who was running an odorless machine,ca me along looking for a job, and lie cleaned it out in one day. It is not expecte 1 of our attorneys to remove the nuisance on south 8ixth street as quickly, but their knowu ability and energy is assurance that the work will be as effectually done, and for which they will have the thanks of the community. The lawyers on tlie other side won’t get these thanks, but in (he line of duty to their client arc putting in their bf**t licks* to defend her, and. as stated in the Mall’s item, they make “a lively quartette for cleaning out this Augean stable.” The Mail’s item clos^l with “begging pardon of Mr. Augeas* oxen,” for classing them, as before stated, with the cattle on south Sixth street. In no way could this refer to the lawyers. This Mr. Kelly candidly admitted after a second reading of the objectionable paragraph. Hereafter, when the Mail attempts anything cute, a card, something like this, together with a chart, will be attached in way of exphination. P. 8. Westfall,Editor Mail.It is proper, in this connection to add that the editor of this paper disclaims any intention to be offensive in any portion of the item refered to. We have the kindliest and most friendly feelings toward each of the attorneys named. This is particularly the case with Mr. Tavlor. This is said because he seemedto feel most aggrieved. His acquaintance wo tirst formed when he was helping out in local reporting on the Daily Express some years ago, and we have since looked upon him as one of the most conscientious and promising of the young lawyers at the bar.The learned pundits of the Gazette— Now, for goodness gracious, we sincerely hope that our neighbors over the way know the moanirtg of tho word “pundit” and will not make life miserable this8T.
