Convicted. 111Kate Martin and Ellen Wills, after a « well contested trial in the Court ot ^ Common Pleas, were convicted, on Wednesday, of keeping a house of pros- titution. A motion for a new trial gwas overruled and Judge Phelps lined S1them *25 each and costs. The fine does not meet the approbation of the public, the punishment not being se\ ere ■ enough for the offense committed, e There may have been fine legal pointsin favor of the accused, which can be set up in extenuation for this leniencj g on the part of the Judge; but on the other hand, there is an open, brazenfaced violation of every law of society,.. clearly proven against these notorious . girls.
